This is an exciting project near Iringa, in the beautiful hill country of southern Tanzania. St Michael’s Church Secondary School, the personal vision of Bishop Donald Mtetemela, was begun by a SoapBox team in 2000 when the site was marked out and the first foundations dug.

The school opened four years ago and now has over 300 students and is continuing to grow. SoapBox teams have been back every year since and with others, have continued to help build much needed additional school accommodation and classrooms.

Building work occupies most of the mornings and in the afternoons we can spend time among the many local children, playing games, doing craft activities and the occasional drama. There are also many opportunities to get to know students at the school who value the chance to talk about our different education systems and to practice their English. We will also be working with the local children

There will be opportunities to visit the local homes of Tanzanian friends and to explore Iringa, the nearest town. And last but not least, we will have a 24-hour visit to Ruaha National Park, one of the biggest (and most beautiful) of Tanzania’s game reserves (not to be missed!).

This is a unique experience. We will be living in an African village amongst the local people.
